Take Every Advantage on the Greens

I am often astounded how club golfers complain about missing putts during a round when they don’t take every advantage presented to them to make more putts.

Of course, there is no way to overcome a faulty putting stroke but you might be missing putts with a good stroke simply because you are poorly aligned from the outset.

There is no excuse these days for not aligning your putterhead to the line you have chosen. It adds no time to a round to mark your ball, read the line and select a spot about 50 centimetres in front of the mark where you want to roll your ball over.

From this point on, you need to use your equipment wisely to ensure your putterhead is square to that mark. If the brand of ball you use doesn’t have a straight logo or a line on it you can use to point at the mark, like Ernie Els is doing here, make sure you draw a line on the equator of your ball (pre-round) to help you out.

This then allows you to set the putter behind the ball, lining up any lines or alignment markings on top of the putterhead square to the line on the ball and, ultimately, your rollover mark on the green.
