TESTER:
Tyler Boatwright
HANDICAP:  7

MODEL AND SHAFT PLAYED: TaylorMade Burner 2.0 3-iron to pitching wedge, fitted with Burner 2.0 Superfast stiff flex steel shafts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: It’s a good-looking club. Normally, an iron in the game-improvement category has a topline that’s way too thick, but this was nice. I’d prefer less offset, but at least the offset on this club wasn’t off-putting – the club sat nice and square behind the ball.

VERDICT: I’d have no problem putting these Burners in my bag, and I’m a blade player. My approach on the 1st was about a club long, which showed how much power was in these irons. The approach to the 2nd was stiff, and had me pretty convinced.

I found the 3-iron to be easy to hit, and very long. It was only later in the test I noticed that the long irons are shaped differently to the rest of the set, with a bigger face. You felt like you couldn’t miss with it.

I did find I was consistently a club longer with each iron. Off-centre hits flew on a good line. You’d still get the feedback on a mis-hit shot, but you really couldn’t tell from the flight of the ball. They were really forgiving.

With these irons, it definitely wasn’t as easy to shape the ball. The right-to-left flight seemed to be fine, and I could hit a low one when needed. But the left-to-right just wanted to stay straight.

TAYLORMADE SAYS: “Weight distribution varies in every Burner 2.0 clubhead to improve ball flight. In the long-irons, weight has been shifted toward the back to promote easy launch. In the middle-irons, weight is distributed more evenly. In the short-irons, weight is positioned to promote a lower, more controllable flight.

“Every individual Burner 2.0 iron boasts a different face thickness. The thinnest and fastest faces are in the long irons, with the face in each successive iron growing thicker.

“Toplines are substantial in the long irons, and grow progressively thinner. The multi-functional sole, introduced in the original Burner iron, has been improved by recessing the heel and toe.”
